What is the food industry?

The food industry is defined as being a collective of businesses that provide food to consumers. This begins at food production and ends with the consumer buying then eating the product. All edible products available for sale are a part of the food industry. This market is varied and includes many different types of services. Baked goods, beverages, confectionaries, jerky, meal prep, snacks and pet food are a few examples of businesses that are in the food industry. Each of these subsets have their own needs for packaging, but all food needs similar protections. This includes protection from environmental factors like sunlight, water and air. In addition, food needs to be secured against abrasion and crushing during shipment.

What can damage food products?

When it comes to storing food products, keeping them fresh is a priority. Moisture and humidity are two external elements that can greatly reduce the quality of your food products. If food products are not kept fresh, they will oxidize, spoil, become rancid, and produce a foul odor. Oxidation can even cause discoloration in food products. In some cases, spoiled food can also become poisonous and dangerous to the health of your customers.

How should food be packaged?

The only way to fully lock in the freshness of food products is to heat seal the bag that they are stored in. This can easily be done with an impulse heat sealer when the machine’s temperature is properly adjusted to the bag’s thickness. Our zip lock pouches come with extra material so that the bag can have two layers of protection. We also offer self-adhesive bags that can be closed without an impulse heater.

Another factor to consider is the size needed to package the product. Packaging that is too small can lead to the contents being damaged or leaking. Packaging that is too big can mislead customers about the amount of product that is held within the package. Many of our packaging bags come in multiple sizes so that your desired portion sizes can be catered to.

What are different types of food packaging materials?

Food is packaged in multiple different materials from glass and wood to paper and plastic.

Mylar is an especially good material for food storage as it is durable, light weight, and resistant to both water and sunlight. The glossy or matte finish that is achievable for Mylar also makes it great for businesses looking to make their product stand out.

Aluminum is also an excellent choice for food storage as like Mylar, it is resistant to water, air, and abrasion. But where aluminum shines is its ability to be fully resistant to water. For this reason, liquid foods should always be stored in one of our heavy duty aluminum bags.

Polyethylene is useful for displaying your product while also protecting it from the elements. Our polyethylene is much stronger and thicker than the standard plastic seen in food storage.

What you need to know about Food Packaging

How do I make my food product stand out?

Supermarket shelves are overcrowded with hundreds of different products and packages. In this sea of food, it is difficult to have your product stand out and grab the customer's attention. One way you can gain their attention is by using bright, bold, colorful packaging bags. We offer a large selection of color options as well as custom printing so that you can fully personalize your packaging. Using colorful packaging is one way you can create the most visually appealing and distinct packaging bag possible. If you want your products to jump off the store shelves, you need to incorporate color and style into your package designs. QQ Studio offers a wide assortment of different color options including glossy or matte finishes as well as Kraft which offers a more simple rustic feeling to the packaging. We also have translucent options which allow the bags contents to be seen, making your product stand out rather than just the packaging.

How do I display my food in a bag?

Bags with windows are excellent for providing protection for your products while also showing off the contents. The combination of protection and display makes windowed bags an excellent storage option. Customers enjoy seeing the product before they buy it, as this provides reassurance that the bags contents are exactly what they are looking for. We offer multiple different window shapes and sizes, from small oval displays to fully clear fronts. You should also consider the shape of your packaging bag. We offer many different shaped bags from jar shaped to bottle bags. These provide a unique style of packaging that is sure to stand out.

How do I display my food in stores?

The shape and style of your packaging also needs consideration. Flat bags are great for food storage, however, if you wish to hang it on a rack you will need a hang hole. For shelf storage, you will need stand up bags with bottom gussets. Open top bags are ideal for single serving items that do not need to be resealed. These types of bags should be displayed like candy bars, with the label facing up in a peel top storage box.

How to extend the shelf life of food?

To keep your food products fresh, store them securely with our product packaging. Our open-top packaging pouches require heat sealing, and our ziplock pouches can also be heat sealed for an additional layer of protection. Both features effectively block out moisture, humidity, and air. Both features effectively block out moisture, humidity, and air. Our stand up bags prevent the contents from being crushed or damaged. As a result, your food products will be kept fresher longer.

What material is best for keeping food fresh?

Mylar is an excellent material for keeping food fresh. Tests have been conducted showing that the food stored in Mylar packaging pouches has retained its freshness and taste 30-40 years after it was packaged. The material is made from a polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate. The benefit of this material is that it is impermeable and tough, but not heavy or bulky. Mylar is light and flexible, as well as capable of holding heavy objects without tearing.

What is food grade packaging?

Packaging is considered food grade when it will not transfer chemical or toxic substances into the food it is holding. Food grade packaging needs to be made from nontoxic materials that will not degrade over time and leak foreign matter into the food being stored. In addition, the packaging should be able to preserve the food's freshness, as well as prevent outside contamination. This includes exposure to moisture, sunlight, and gasses.  All packaging that holds food needs to be food grade if it is going to be sold. All of the packaging at QQ Studio is guaranteed to be food safe and capable of keeping food fresh.

Why Bags are Better than Boxes for Food Storage

Much of the food that you can find on supermarket shelves are packaged in boxes. For this reason, companies may feel that boxes are the right fit for them. But storage pouches have many benefits over boxes. Compared to boxes, pouches are more flexible and resistant to wrinkling. The ability to zip lock and heat seal the bags makes them more secure and capable of keeping food fresher than boxes could. Bags also take up less space than boxes, both when the containers are empty and when they are filled.

How does Packaging affect my Brand Identity?

Packaging and logos are the first thing customers think about when they consider a brand. Think of your favorite chips company. What did you see first, their logo and packaging or their product? Packaging and brand identity are tied together. It is imperative that you choose a storage bag that associates your brand with quality.

Fortunately at QQ Studio we also offer custom printing so that all of your branding needs can be met. With a custom logo and the perfect color choice, your packaged food will have a distinct and memorable image.
