Why Tie-Dye?

Tie-Dyeing is a fun and easy way to transform a boring shirt into a work of art. The only problem is there are so many different ways to make a tie-dye shirt, and all of them are great! It was a very difficult task, but we searched through all the different tie-dye techniques and narrowed it down to our 5 favorites. View this blog if you need inspiration for your next craft night!

To create all of these patterns you will need:

• 1 white t-shirt
• 2-5 vials of fabric safe dye powder (depending on how many colors you want)
• 2-5 squeeze bottles
• Water
• 1 plastic QuickQlick™ bag
• 5-10 rubber bands
• 2 cups of ice (optional)

Heart Tie-Dye

We are in love with this wonderful heart-shaped pattern. Making this one is so easy too, just draw the outline of one side of the heart, wrap that portion of the shirt with a rubber band, dye it, and when the dye dries you'll have a lovely shirt!

Ice Tie-Dye

This next tie-dye technique is pretty cool. Instead of mixing your powdered dyes with water, you use ice! This method is also really simple. Just crumple up and bind your shirt as you would with any other tie-dye technique, place it under some ice, then scatter the powder on top. As the ice melts and the dye mixes, you'll be met with a chillingly beautiful shirt.

Crumple Tie-Dye

Now, we know we called the other two patterns simple, but this one is even easier. To create the crumple pattern, mush the shirt up into a wad and bind it with rubber bands. The beauty of this pattern is in the random designs and patterns that your crumpling creates. No one can guess how your shirt will look until it's finished. This is the most beginner-friendly pattern of tie-dyeing.

Spiral Tie-Dye

This next pattern will make your head spin. The spiral pattern is an iconic tie-dye pattern for a reason. It's so easy to make a dazzling shirt with your own two hands. Just pinch the center, spin it, bind it with rubber bands, and cover the shirt with dye. When it dries, you'll have a dizzyingly impressive shirt.

Shibori Tie-Dye

The Shibori is a Japanese technique that utilizes a twisting spiral method to create a defined and intricate pattern. To do this one, take your shirt and twist it tightly. Wrap it with string or rubber bands to keep it together, then coil the shirt into a spiral. Flatten it down, and bind it up, then just add your dye.

Finishing Up

When you create any kind of tie-dye shirt, you need to seal it in a plastic bag as it dries so you don’t leak dye onto all of your furniture or clothing.
